A brief introduction: the name Cavalcanti is quite
common in my country, almost like Smith or Jones.
Filippo Cavalcanti is attested in our northeastern
region around 1560, where he married Catarina de
Albuquerque, the daughter of a nobleman of illustrious
ancestry with an Amerindian girl. Several authors have
doubted that Filippo was in fact a Florentine
Cavalcanti - they had some reason in their doubt, as
the arms they bear in my country are remarkably
different from those used in Florence, but for the
crest - but I've contacted the Florentine Archivio di
Stato and they duly sent me a couple of documents that
explicitly assert that one Filippo di Giovanni
Cavalcanti was in Portugal in 1558. So, case closed
here.

There remained the question of his ancestry. I could
recover it in a second-hand version through the
Gamurrini 17th century genealogy for that family.
(There are some problems with it that I can later
discuss.) Gamurrini is quite detailed, and describes
the so-called Neapolitan branch of the family, where
we find Mainardo and Amerigo Cavalcanti in the mid- to
late 14th century.

(Amerigo Cavalcanti is the gfather of Ginevra
Cavalcanti, who married Lorenzo de' Medici, of the
so-called popolano branch of the family. They fathered
Pier Francesco de' Medici, who married Laudomia
Acciaioli.)

Mainardo Cavalcanti and his brother Amerigo had long
been Acciaioli associated. I have a reference to a
letter from Nicola Acciaioli, Count of Melfi, dated
from Melfi, and addressed to an Acciaioli kinsnman and
to Amerigo, and we find Mainardo and Amerigo in Athens
during the early Acciaioli rule, still in the 14th
century. Mainardo Cavalcanti is known to have married
Andreina Acciaioli, the widow of a Count Guidi. I have
a Gamurrini reference that Amerigo married an unnamed
sister of Andreina. I couldn't so far find other
references to that marriage, but for the indirect
possibility due to the proximity of Amerigo to the
Acciaioli.
